Fontaine to Begin Work on Holyoke Public Library
Holyoke, MA
December 21, 2011
Fontaine Bros. will begin work January 2nd on the renovations and addition to the Holyoke Public Library. Originally constructed in 1902, the library has served as a community center to the downtown Holyoke community for over 100 years. Set to be transform the library into a modern, inviting space, the project will also involve significant historical preservation including original murals and woodwork.
Many elements of the building will be salvaged or protected for reuse, including glass flooring that will be reused in site features. Plans call for the “stacks” wing of the existing building to be demolished and replaced with a 15,000 square foot space featuring curtain walls to increase natural lighting in the building.
Construction on the building will continue through the Spring of 2013, with the buildings grand reopening set for June of that year. Finegold, Alexander, and Associates is the project architect and D.A. Sullivan is the Owner’s Project Manager. The building is targeting LEED Certification.
